Botafogo sacked head coach Franclim Carvalho on Tuesday, August 18, following a poor run of results. The Portuguese coach leaves four months after taking charge of the first team. Pressure intensified after a 6-1 defeat to Cienciano in Cusco in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 tie. Botafogo then travelled from Peru to Salvador, where they lost 1-0 to Vitória in Round 23 of the Brazilian Serie A.

Franclim’s record at Botafogo

Franclim Carvalho managed Botafogo in 22 matches, recording 10 wins, seven draws and five defeats. He joined the club in April as Martín Anselmi’s successor. Before becoming head coach, Franclim Carvalho had worked at Botafogo as an assistant to Artur Jorge during the club’s 2024 Copa Libertadores and Brazilian league title-winning campaigns. During his spell in charge, Botafogo were also knocked out of the Copa do Brasil by Chapecoense in the fifth round.

What changes for Botafogo

The dismissal comes two days before the return match against Cienciano. Botafogo host the Peruvian side at Nilton Santos Stadium on Thursday, August 20, at 9:30 pm local time, needing to overturn a five-goal deficit to remain in the Copa Sudamericana. The club have not announced who will take charge of the second leg or named a permanent replacement for Franclim Carvalho.
